VSF: What follows are my answers in response to the insightful questions from a reader regarding the Wisdom in the Bhagavad Gita. Thank you!
Dear V. Susan Ferguson – I happened to read your article “There are No Individual Souls!” at http://www.inannareturns.com/articles/2015/DoerKarma.htm
I always get confused when trying to understand that there is only one.
* Are we one or different from Lord Shri Krishna?
* If we are one with Lord Shri Krishna, he never comes under spell of the Maya according to Shrimad Bhagvad Gita, how come we then?
* If we are energies (Para and Apara), what is the real identity (Swarup) of the Lord Shri Krishna?
* What is our relationship with the Lord?
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna is the “VOICE” of God, meaning the seer and sage Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa uses Krishna to speak the eternal metaphysical Wisdom Knowledge that is found in the ancient Sanskrit texts the Rig Veda and the Upanishads. Vyasa was an incredible great genius who managed to distill the essence of, all the best Wisdom Knowledge from the ancient Sanskrit texts into the Bhagavad Gita. Some of the verses are in fact direct quotes from several Upanishads. The Upanishads were written by the great seers sages of ancient times to explain the Rig Veda, because they knew the real meaning of the Rig Veda was being lost as mankind descended into the Kali Yuga.
Q: Are we one or different from Lord Shri Krishna?
We are both different individuals – and simultaneously one with the One God, God Consciousness that Krishna speaks as. God as the ONE Eternal Immeasurable Imperishable Ubiquitous Immensity takes on countless forms throughout multiple universes, all of which are the Infinite expressions of that One. God the Oneness ‘VEILS’ Its magnificent greatness in these various forms. You are one of these forms. You have a Spirit body [the sharira] that moves through many lifetimes in various identities, what I call data-collecting vehicles, or bodies.
Even as we are incarnating in these temporal appearances, we are still God. However to enjoy the adventure in Time & Space, we are Veiled, meaning we “forget” our real nature, which is the One God. Concealed in secret within each human Heart is the God within each of us. Our God-within waits patiently, allowing us to chase, follow, and pursue our own individual experiences, the manifestations in Space-Time that we project as our temporal illusory holograms.
Our God-within awaits our Return to Remembrance. This is what Enlightenment is: We Remember that even though we have been moving through endless lives in many bodies and dimensions, we always are and always have been the ONE, our true Self, Home.
Q: If we are one with Lord Shri Krishna, he never comes under spell of the Maya according to Shrimad Bhagvad Gita, how come we then?
Krishna tells Arjuna that as the One God, he is NEVER changed by the power of Maya. If these endless appearances altered the One Source, the universes themselves would quickly move into major disharmony, weaken and collapse. The God would not be able to create again.
All existences are contained in God, but God is not contained by them.
मया ततमिदं सर्वं जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना .
मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि न चाहं तेष्ववस्थितः .. ९– ४..
mayā tatam idaṃ sarvaṃ jagad avyaktamūrtinā
matsthāni sarvabhūtāni na cāhaṃ teṣv avasthitaḥ 9.4
Maya is not mere Illusion. Maya is the Creative Force, the SHAKTI POWER that God utilizes to manifest these universes. There are many universes. Maya is the tool box, the algorithms, the Matrix, Prakriti’s three gunas [RAJAS – SATTVA – TAMAS] that are constantly in motion weaving endless layers of appearances, from the most subtle to rock solid.
Maya has no power over the One, because the One God is Maya’s Creator and User. God, in this case speaking through Lord Krishna, has total dominion over Maya and remains pure, unaltered, untouched — the Eternal source of all the Cosmogonic Forces. These Cosmogonic Forces are the real meaning of the ancient ‘gods’ in the Rig Veda, such as Indra, Agni, Soma, Varuna, the Ashvins, the Maruts, Usha, etc.
Q: If we are energies (Para and Apara), what is the real identity (Swarup) of the Lord Shri Krishna?
Because Lord Krishna is speaking as the One, meaning God-Consciousness Itself, the real SWARUP – identity and form of Krishna – is ALL. The God within you and everyone pervades and permeates the entire universe, every person, every creature, rock, river, mountain and tree, from the most lowly serpent to the Himalayas, and all the millions of galaxies.
WIKI from the Mundaka Upanishad I.i.3-5:
Saunaka, having asked – कस्मिन्नु भगवो विज्ञाते सर्वमिदं विज्ञातं भवतीति (” Revered Sir, what is that by the knowing of which all this becomes known? “), – was told by Angiras that –
- अथ परा यया तदक्षरमधिग्म्यते || – (Mundaka Upanishad I.i.3-5)
There were two different kinds of knowledge to be acquired – ‘the higher knowledge’ or Para Vidya (Sanskrit: परा विद्या ) and ‘the lower knowledge’ or Apara Vidya. The lower knowledge consists of all textual knowledge – the four Vedas, the science of pronunciation etc., the code of rituals, grammar, etymology, metre and astrology.
The higher knowledge is by which the immutable and the imperishable Atman is realized, which knowledge brings about the direct realization of the Supreme Reality, the source of All. The knowledge of the Atman is very subtle; it cannot be obtained out of one’s own effort; the Atman cannot be intuitively apprehended by mere intellectual equipments.
Thus, Angiras draws the distinction between the way of knowledge and the way of realization, as between opinion and truth. For understanding this for realizing the Reality the aspirant must seek a teacher. The teacher who has already realized his identity with the Atman alone can impart this much sought-after wisdom on the strength of his own experiences.
A human being is blessed with the faculty of self-knowledge which is Apara Vidya or logical reasoning and also with the faculty of understanding and self-awareness which is Para Vidya or quantum logic. Para Vidya is defined as the intuitive vision of non-duality; it is the transcendental knowledge which is beyond all limits of knowledge, experience and reason, which is, beyond intellect, mind and sense.
The Absolute, which is Truth, which is Reality, is neither an expression nor a reflection of itself; it is non-dual being devoid of otherness, and it cannot be an object of knowledge in the ordinary sense as it surpasses the intellect in subtleness. Knowledge is truth and truth is correspondence of an apprehension with its object. It is the intellect which moves within the sphere of duality resulting in delusion, wrong identification etc. Para Vidya is the intuitive level of vidya that stems from a unity, and manifests as a vision, manifests as an experience.
Q: What is our relationship with the Lord?
As I have said, God waits patiently for each one of us to Return to the Wisdom Knowledge that we have always been That, meaning one with God. This is the secret of God Realization — we Realize that we are the One that permeates and pervades All. For some this may come in one awesome moment, for most it is a gradual process through which God enjoys our Return to TRUTH, our coming Home to the God-within.
There are many ways to come Home, in fact you might say that there are as many ways Home as there are individual human beings. This is God’s joy. As Krishna says he takes delight in all their Ways, for all these ‘pathways’ Home are also God the Oneness. This is God’s “Play” in Sanskrit the Divine Lila. God enjoys our experiences as Veiled portions of Itself, and God enjoys our Return.
God is Love. The sweet Mystery!
God is literally the frequency waveform LOVE. Therefore the more we tune into the frequency of Love, the closer we become in our approach to God, our Home. Love is the ultimate Key, the Secret to our Return, to Becoming that which we have always been, and always will be. We literally ride the frequency waveforms of Divine Love Home!
The Wisdom Knowledge that God is Love is the basis of BHAKTI YOGA, which simply means Union through Devotion to God. By loving God, we resonate and attune our own frequencies, our consciousness to the vibrational frequency waveform of the eternal ubiquitous One. This is a mysterious and wondrous dance. We can love God as the Beloved — in the form of a child, a mother or father, our beloved lover, etc. Thus we form a very real and nurturing relationship with God as we move into God Consciousness.
This relationship will generate the frequency waveforms of God Consciousness that will eventually and ultimately brings us into God Consciousness. And within the waves of God Consciousness, we may choose to be an instrument for the One.
Thank you for your very thoughtful questions,
V. Susan Ferguson
